Topic: Excel Transfers without M$ Excel installedPosted: September 07 2006 at 1:43pm |
|
It just happened again that a user sent me an .XLS file to upload via AccuTerm 5.2a, and the wizard notices I do not have Micro$oft Excel installed and will go no further.
I know this subject has come up in discussions before. I also know it's hard for some people to imagine any computer user not having everything Micro$oft, but I like OpenOffice way better and OpenOffice is free. I will never have Excel installed on my Windoze system. So then, will the new version 5.3a pass over the Excel installed requirement? Can I create a dummy file that satisfies the "looking for Excel" bit? Failing either, then make this a feature request. Thanks |

Hi Alan -
The File Transfer Wizard uses Automation to locate the workbook, worksheet and range of data you want to transfer. OpenOffice does not have the same interface (I'm not sure it even has an automation interface), so the Wizard will not work with it. If you convert the file to a comma-delimited or tab-delimited file using OpenOffice, the Wizard will work fine with the text file. The FTD program, which is invoked by the Wizard to perform the actual transfer, will work without Excel, but with limited functionality. I think it only works with the first worksheet of a workbook, and does not handle ranges, etc. It works better when Excel is available. Thanks, Pete |

Thanks Pete.
That workaround is what I have been doing anyway. |
