Topic: HOST or IP for remote (web) connectionPosted: May 15 2015 at 1:38am |

Using AccuTerm to connect to D3/NT server on network. All clients are connecting to the server via Accuterm using the server name (HPSERVER) on the same network. My question, how do I configure AccuTerm to connect to server from a remote connection via the Internet? The network is connected to the Internet via a router (dsl). I know the IP address may change but my experience is that it does not change often. I am trying to configure AccuTermMobile on an iPad to connect to the server. What should I enter as the "HOST or IP" address. I know the external address for the router. I know the local IP address and/or server name. What is the proper syntax for the HOST or IP address? Is there anything else I need to configure besides this information?

Hi Bruce -
To connect from outside of your local network, you need to enter the public IP address of the router. You also need to make sure the router is configured to forward the connection to the private IP address of HPSERVER, and to the correct port. This is often under "port forwarding" or "applications" router configuration. You should use a non-standard port on the public side to make it a little more difficult for hackers. And be sure to use good passwords on D3/NT cause hackers still might find your server and poke at it. Secure shell would be better, but its difficult to set up on D3/NT. If you're going to use your iPad both on the internal network and on the Internet, you should set up two profiles in AccuTerm Mobile - one using the public IP for Internet access and one using HPSERVER (or its local IP) for local access. The port might be different as well. Thanks, Pete |
