Event logs filling up on D3/NT 7.3.6 Windows 2000 Server.
Here are snippets of nt_eventlog, nt_pinfo, where az for one port (142). nt_eventlog: 4) 06/14/04 05:45:32PM *** Type=WRNG Source=D3_Unclassified Computer=CTS-D3 Class D3_Unclassified, Exception NE-1, Error -1, Thread 0xce0 Discarded IAC sequence 9) 06/14/04 05:43:32PM *** Type=WRNG Source=D3_Unclassified Computer=CTS-D3 Class D3_Unclassified, Exception NE-1, Error -1, Thread 0xce0 Discarded IAC sequence 14) 06/14/04 05:41:32PM *** Type=WRNG Source=D3_Unclassified Computer=CTS-D3 Class D3_Unclassified, Exception NE-1, Error -1, Thread 0xce0 Discarded IAC sequence nt_pinfo: 142 00000ce0 T 1.703 0.281 763 805 192.168.50.92:1520 where 142 (az +0142 033585 F390 000018 2 RDL_GETCHAR:000 RDL_GETCHAR:000 READLINX:000 BR_INPUT:000 These are all generated from workstations running Accuterm telnet sessions to D3/NT 7.3.6. Getting one every 2 minutes for each workstation using Accuterm with telnet sessions to D3/NT. The above is only one of several workstations that do the same thing. Any ideas other that overwriting log or clearing? Would like to know why this is happening! |

Hi kilomike -
The errors are due to the brain-dead telnet server on D3/NT. Actually, they are the result of the "send keepalives" option in the advanced telnet settings (tools->settings->connection->advanced). There is technically no "keepalive" feature in the telnet protocol, but there are some messages that, given a certain state, are defined by the protocol to be ignored. AccuTerm uses one of these "ignore" messages for its keepalive. The keepalive interval happens to be 2 minutes, which is exactly what you are seeing in the error log. The D3 telnet server is brain-dead on two accounts here. First, if it follows the spec, it should simply ignore the message. Second, if it does not recognize a command, it should simply ignore it. The spec does not hint that an unrecognized command is an error. Bottom line: turn off keepalives when using D3/NT telnet. Thanks, Pete |

Is it always best to use a host type of "D3/NT" instead of "default" in Accuterm settings for telnet connection to a D3/NT server?
And and have Send keepalives uncheck? |

Hi -
The D3/NT host type sets telnet options that are most compatible with the D3/NT telnet server, so you should always select this host type for D3/NT hosts. And, as explained above, never select the keepalives option. At least until Raining Data corrects thier telnet server to ignore the unrecognized IAC sequence, as the telnet specification mandates. Thanks, Pete |

Hi guys. I just saw this thread and decided to be proactive about reporting it to RD. Action Item 30267 has been filed for this issue. There's no telling if it will result in a change but at least the process has been started.
