Hello all,
I am still trying to learn all this stuff. Sorry if I don't have some basic knowledge...this is my first hand at PICK. So I am trying to move an old PICK database from a McDonnell Douglas machine to the windows environment. I have installed mvBase and plan to move the necessary files using ACCUTERM. During the process of FTPINST the file transfer siezes and aborts. Sometimes it makes it to only the second file and other times it will make it through 10 or so files but in any event the file progress stops and the errors start accumulating then the whole thing aborts. Would someone know some reasons why the upload of utility programs is so difficult in this case? I am getting a little disheartened with this process. I figured that surely others have had to perform a similar migration. If anyone is aware of a place where I can learn more about this database migration I sure could use the moral boost and would be everso grateful. Thank you kindly, zach |

Zach,
Are you having a problem installing the host programs on the PICK machine or on the MV-Base machine or both? Your message didn't seem to make that very clear. Pete will probably need this information to help you with your problem. Another way to go at this problem is using FILESAVES or ACCOUNTSAVES. Not sure what kind of equipment you have on your MD machine but you maybe able to create a file save of some sort to a tape or disk file and then do a restore on the MV-BASE side. If you provide a little more version information about your PICK environment on the MD machine someone here maybe able to help you with more options. You may also want to try the news groups. comp.database.pick I believe. There are a number of PICK related newgroups out there. Good Luck on your migration, Deech |

Hi Zach -
You should not encounter any difficulty installing the file transfer programs on the mvBase machine. The Mcdonnel Douglas machine is another story. Typically you only have serial connections to this kind of machine, and the older machines have really bad serial hardware and drivers. They can handle receiving data from a keyboard - at maybe 5 keystrokes a second max - but they really fall apart when pumping in a stream of data, as in a file transfer. If this is where you are having difficulty, then try slowing the baud rate way down for the port you are using for file transfer. I don't have any Mcdonnel Douglas documentation around anymore, so I cannot tell you how to change the baud rate on that machine, but give that a try. Try using 1200 baud. If you do not have any problem with 1200, then try 2400. I would not use anything above 2400. As far as using an ACCOUNT-SAVE to transfer the data file, this is a great idea, but you will need to find someone that can do the media conversion, as I am sure that there is no compatible media between the two machines. Thanks, Pete |

Deech and Pete,
Thank you so much for your help. Here is the info on the machine, and yes it is the MD that is giving me fits. It is a McDonnell Douglas MicroData 6000 machine. It is running Reality 2.3D. By the way Pete, you are right. I am connected via serial connection so your explanation makes a lot of sense. Is it the baud rate on the MD that needs to be reconfigured? How about the baud rate setting in Accuterm? And for what its worth I was not able to use the MD install text file from the pickbp folder, I had to use the script for generic PICK systems. I don't know if that tells you anything or not... Again I am extremely appreciative to receive yalls replies...it gives me hope! Thank you, zach |

Hi Zach -
Both AccuTerm and the MD serial port need to be at the same baud rate. On most systems, you can connect at the current speed, and issue the TCL command to change the speed of the MD port. Once this command executes, you will no longer be able to communicate with the host until you change the rate in AccuTerm to match. After slowing down the baud rate, try installing the MD install script again. Thanks, Pete |

Awesome Pete!
Thank you for the explanation. I will give it a whirl and update you with the results. Thanks again, Zach |
