Hi Steve -

I don't have any idea why FTSEND would chew up overflow space on D3. FTSEND does not update any files and internal string variables are trimmed regularly. Maybe something else is going on, like a trigger or something that gets called when FTSEND reads a record from the file you are trying to archive.

Thanks,

Pete

Hi,

A better way ... I would be writing the text files from whatever MV database you are using direct to a shared folder on the server file system, and then copying/moving those files to the destination PC.

You say you are transferring to text files. To me, this implies that you are creating one text file for each record. Personally, I would create one text file for some much larger group of records (say one month or one year of data), write out the data in CSV format with one line for each record.

Creating O/S level text files and then using O/S level copy facilities should be several orders of magnitude faster than using the AccuTerm file transfer utilities. But you will need to ensure that you have enough disk space for the text files you are creating! You could zip the files to reduce storage requirements, but you still need the disk space to create them in the first place (plus the temporary space used by the zip utility).

HTH,

Brian

Interesting that nobody thinks this is odd.  Hey, I'm even open to being told that I'm using FTSEND in a way it wasn't designed for and that there is a better way of doing what I'm trying to do.

Well, it didn't make it.  It only got about 4% the way through the file and the system ran out of disk space! Is this a bug or is there something I'm not doing right?  Or is it possibly a design limitation?  I had to actually log out (exit) the session before I could get the disk space back.

I am using FTSEND to archive files on our old D3 system.  I noticed that the overflow space (use POVF command on D3) is consistently going down while I'm running it.  I am the only user on the system and this particular file has over 3,000,000 items that I'm sending to the PC as text files.  I verified that all the item names are PC valid so I used the "*" option in the FTSEND parameter list to tell it to send all.  Is this normal that it uses disk space like this which I assume it will return when it's done?
