We are using SB+ version 6.2 on UniVerse 11.1 on a unix box.

We use PRC for SDLC  control and would like to configure PRC so that it can do a better job of monitoring changes through external editors.

We use Accuterm as the standard Terminal Emulator for our business users and most of our developers.

Some of our developers also use Ultra Edit because it has a method of handling 'large' txt files.
These large txt files are imports/exports to vendors and may be several GB.
We need to be able to open these files.

Can you tell us if WED is able to deal with large files of this magnitude?
If so, we may be better switching to WED as our standard editor
That would make it easier to interface with PRC as Susan J. does not yet have that piece working for Ultra Edit.

I have tried searching the Zumasys forums but do not find anything relevant.

Hope you can help

Hi Mycroft -

I don't think wED would be a good choice for very large files. First, wED needs to read the file from Universe, which would send the entire file to Windows over the ssh or telnet session. Then wED is a memory-based editor, so you would need sufficient RAM to hold the file being edited. When saving the file back to Universe, there may be multiple copies of it in memory at the same time. And wED is a 32 bit program, so it only has about 3GB memory available to work with.

I'm not sure how UltraEdit reads a Unix file, but probably uses FTP, SMB, NFS or something that is more suited to transferring large chunks of data.

Thanks,

Pete
